Pelargonium triste is a fascinating caudiciform plant prized for its rounded, textured caudex and delicate, finely divided foliage.
Unlike ordinary leafy houseplants, this species stores water and energy inside its swollen caudex. This allows it to survive seasonal dry periods and natural dormancy. Over time, the caudex develops an increasingly mature, sculptural appearance, making each specimen a unique living display piece.
During active growth, the plant produces soft, finely cut green foliage. Depending on the season, it may also enter dormancy and lose some or all of its leaves. This natural transformation is part of the appeal of growing caudiciform plants.
The plant is supplied potted. The caudex measures approximately 6–7cm across; please refer to the measurement image for scale.

Plant Care Guide
Light:
Place in bright light with some gentle direct sun. Morning or late-afternoon sunlight is ideal. Introduce stronger light gradually to avoid scorching fresh foliage.
Watering:
Water when the plant is actively growing and the soil has dried well. Do not keep the compost constantly moist.
As foliage begins to yellow, dry, or fall, reduce watering. During full dormancy, only minimal moisture may be required, depending on temperature and growing conditions.
Soil:
Use a gritty, free-draining caudex or succulent mix. Mineral ingredients such as pumice, grit, perlite, or coarse sand help protect the roots and caudex from excess moisture.
Temperature:
Keep the plant frost free. Protect it from prolonged cold, damp weather and provide good airflow.
Dormancy:
Pelargonium triste naturally has active-growth and dormancy periods. During dormancy, the leaves may yellow, dry out, and fall away completely.
This does not automatically indicate a problem. The caudex may remain healthy while the plant appears leafless. Fresh foliage can return when the next active-growth period begins.
Fertiliser:
Apply a diluted cactus or succulent fertiliser occasionally during active growth. Do not fertilise while dormant.
Shipping Information
This plant will be shipped potted.
The pot and plant will be securely packed to reduce movement during delivery. Because the foliage is soft and delicate, some leaves may bend, dry, or detach during transport.
After arrival, place the plant in a bright, ventilated position and allow it several days to settle before watering heavily or repotting.
