The Astrophytum asterias, also known as the Sand Dollar Cactus or Sea Urchin Cactus, is a rare and highly collectible cactus species native to northeastern Mexico and southern Texas. This specimen, measuring approximately 4.5–5cm in diameter, has a perfectly round, spineless body marked with symmetrical white flecks, resembling a patterned star. In the growing season, it produces stunning yellow flowers with vibrant orange centers, adding a splash of color to any plant collection. Ideal for collectors of rare succulents and cacti, this slow-growing beauty is perfect for both indoor and outdoor displays in warm climates.
Care Guide
Light: Prefers bright, direct sunlight for 4–6 hours daily. Place near a south-facing window or under strong grow lights.
Watering: Follow the “soak and dry” method — water thoroughly when the soil is completely dry. Reduce watering in autumn and keep almost dry in winter.
Soil: Requires a well-draining cactus mix, ideally with added pumice or perlite to prevent root rot.
Temperature: Thrives between 20–35°C; protect from frost and avoid temperatures below 10°C for prolonged periods.
Fertilizer: Use diluted cactus fertilizer once a month during the growing season (spring–summer). Avoid feeding in winter.
Dormancy: Keep in a bright, cool, and dry location during winter to encourage healthy growth and flowering the following season.
